Mentor Tips & Tricks

As a mentor, it’s not always easy to know how to guide the conversation, especially when every mentee is at a different stage in their journey. This guide offers a set of common topics and simple, open-ended prompts designed to help you support your mentee with confidence. Whether they’re exploring career paths, building confidence, or navigating a transition, these questions can spark meaningful, focused dialogue while keeping the conversation mentee-led.

Career Direction and Goal Setting

  • What roles or industries are you drawn to, and why?

  • What would you love to try if there were no risk?

  • What have you already tried so far?
  • What’s one thing you bring to the table that others might not?
  • How do you want people to remember you and your application?

  • What’s one connection you could make this week?

  • Do you feel ready for a growth or salary conversation?

Wrapping Up

Close with a question that brings clarity or focus.

  • What feels clearer after your chat, what they’d like to try before reconnecting, or whether staying in touch would be helpful. These prompts help end the session with a sense of direction.

Setting the Stage

Before the call, take a few minutes to get settled and review your mentee’s lumentor profile. Logging in a bit early helps ensure your tech is working and gives you a moment to prepare. If possible, keep your camera on, it builds connection and helps create a more engaging, personal conversation. Most importantly, approach the session with openness and curiosity rather than expectations. Your role is to support and guide, not to have all the answers.

0:00–5:00

Ease In

Begin with a brief check-in, asking how they’re doing, and then introduce yourselves. Keep it natural and relaxed.

5:00–15:00

Explore Together

Let the conversation flow. They come with questions. Follow their lead and be present.

15:00–20:00

Wrap Up

Close with a takeaway, reflection, or small next step. Lastly, a thought-ending helps the session land meaningfully.

Role and Boundaries

As a mentor, your role is to create space for honest reflection, ask thoughtful questions, and share your own story and insights when helpful. Let the mentee take the lead, and support them in thinking through their own goals and challenges. Remember, you’re not expected to have all the answers, provide instant solutions, or act as a 24/7 resource. You’re here to be a sounding board, someone who listens, encourages, and helps them build confidence as they navigate their next steps.

You don’t need to have all the answers, just showing up with curiosity, empathy, and a willingness to share your own experiences can make a powerful impact. Use these prompts as flexible tools, not a script, and don’t worry about covering everything in one session. What matters most is helping your mentee feel seen, heard, and supported as they move forward.
